THE STORY BEHIND THE ALBUM

Two worlds, one dream

Some dreams take you in a different direction than you imagined. For ELIKIA, football was the beginning of a journey that would eventually lead him to music.

Before becoming an Afrobeats artist, ELIKIA spent years pursuing a career in professional football. He developed his game at Ajax’s renowned academy, where he played alongside future stars including Jurriën Timber, Quinten Timber, Ryan Gravenberch and Brian Brobbey. Football taught him discipline, resilience and the importance of believing in yourself, even when the odds are against you.

But as his journey unfolded, another passion began to grow. Music had always been part of his life, and eventually, ELIKIA made the decision to step away from professional football to pursue a new dream.

It was a decision that meant starting from zero. With no released music and no studio of his own, he had nothing but a vision and the belief that he could build something meaningful. He invested in his own equipment, developed his sound and began carving out his place in the music industry.

That belief became the foundation of everything that followed. In just a few years, ELIKIA built an audience of millions of streams, establishing himself as an emerging voice in Afrobeats. Yet, despite leaving professional football behind, the game never truly left him.

His experiences on the pitch continue to shape his approach to music. The discipline required to compete, the pressure to perform, the setbacks along the way and the determination to find your own path are all part of the same journey. Combined with his Dutch, Congolese and Nigerian roots, these experiences have helped shape an identity that is uniquely his own.

Now, with his debut album FIRST OF A KIND, ELIKIA brings these two worlds together.

THE CONCEPT

A starting eleven

The album is built around a concept inspired by football: a starting eleven. With eleven tracks, each song represents a player on the pitch, with its own position, purpose and role to play. Just as a football team needs every player to contribute to the bigger picture, every track brings something different to the album.

More than a collection of songs, FIRST OF A KIND represents the different sides of ELIKIA — his background, his influences, his ambition and the experiences that have shaped him into the artist he is today. It reflects the journey from one dream to another, and the courage it takes to pursue a path that is entirely your own.

The title captures that mindset. Being first of a kind is not about following an established formula. It is about creating your own, embracing the experiences that make you different and having the confidence to move forward without knowing exactly where the journey will lead.

For ELIKIA, football and music were never as far apart as they might seem. Both demand creativity, dedication, teamwork and an unshakable belief in what is possible.

With FIRST OF A KIND, he brings everything he has learned into one project — a new chapter built on the foundations of the past, and a statement of where he intends to go next.
